Equipment For Camping Cocktails

You don’t need any fancy equipment to make cocktails on the road. With a few simple essentials, you can make impressive drinks that will make your camping trip feel like a luxury holiday.

You can buy cocktail kits and cocktail essentials, but if you can’t afford that or would rather spend your budget elsewhere, here’s some equipment that you can take with you to make some excellent drinks. Most of these items will be multi-use and you may already have packed for cooking.

  • A chopping board

  • A sharp steak or paring knife

  • A cocktail or protein shaker

  • A tea strainer or small mesh strainer

  • Jugs or bottles if you wish to make cocktails ahead

  • Chopstick or spoon for stirring

  • Ice

  • Unbreakable glasses

Why Unbreakable Glassware?

The most obvious answer to this question is: They are unbreakable! But seriously, there’s many reasons you should consider investing in a set of unbreakable glassware and include them in your entertaining and holiday adventures.

  • They are environmentally friendly: polycarb glassware is tough and flexible, stronger than acrylic, is dishwasher safe and therefore can be reused over and over again. In addition, breaking a glass in your garden or campsite can be dangerous for you, your loved ones and local wildlife.

  • They are lighter than glass: which makes them ergonomic and easy to hold. Their lightness also makes them easy to pack and carry with you while travelling.

  • They are multi-use: they can be used for many different beverages, and for many different functions: think camping, parties, by the pool, in the garden and for everyday use.

Okay now let’s dive into the cocktails! These recipes have been put together by Marni - she’s a Craft spirit & wine enthusiast from the Gold Coast, who has a passion for mixology and creating delicious concoctions for her followers.

Cocktails For Camping & Caravanning:

1. Mulled Wine / Sangria

Recommended glassware: D-Still 480ml Stemless Polycarbonate Wine Glass

I’ve created a delicious and simple recipe that can be served as mulled wine in Winter and sangria in Summer. This recipe is super versatile and can be made ahead- once the mixture is cooled, simply pour into drink bottles or sealed jugs to take on the road with you (use within 3 days). Simply reheat in a pot over your campfire or serve cold as above.

Serves 4:

Ingredients:

  • 1 750ml bottle of red wine

  • ¼ cup brandy or cognac

  • ½ an orange, sliced

  • 1 star anise

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 2tbs honey or sugar

  • ½ tsp vanilla paste or extract

Method:

Add all ingredients to a pot on medium to low heat and stir occasionally until honey is dissolved. Don’t allow the mixture to bubble or boil. Keep the mixture on the heat for at least 15-30 mins. Take off the heat, serve or allow to cool until you are ready to drink.

For mulled wine, serve warm as is and garnish with fresh spices and orange slices.

For sangria, add ice and mixer - I recommend lemonade, Agrum (blood orange soda) or pineapple juice. Garnish with fresh spices and orange slices.

Recipe notes:

  • The red wine can be any dry variety you choose, just don’t go for the top shelf as you will be adding lots of flavour. (I used a mid-priced Hunter Valley Shiraz)

  • If you don’t have brandy or cognac, you could use rum, orange liqueur like Cointreau or you can leave it out if you like. (I used Hennessy VS)

  • In place of orange, you could use mandarins or blood oranges, or berries if you prefer.

  • In place of whole spices, use a tsp each of ground, and feel free to change them up or add others!

  • Add as much sugar or honey as you like. For lower carb, use an alternate sweetener.

2. Negroni

Recommended glassware: D-Still 295ml Polycarbonate Diamond Cut Old Fashion Glass

This super simple and tasty drink can be made ahead and simply poured over ice when you are ready to drink. The recipe below is for one, simply multiply the quantities to make these for more people!

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 30ml Gin

  • 30ml Bitter Orange Aperitif

  • 30ml Sweet Vermouth

Method:

Pour all ingredients into a bottle / sealed jug or jar. When ready to use, simply pour 90mls of the mixture over ice and stir well. Garnish with an orange wedge or peel.

Recipe notes:

  • The traditional recipe here uses Campari, but you can use any bitter orange aperitif such as Aperol or try an Australian brand such as Sofi, Vero or Adelaide Hills Distillery Bitter Orange. I used Poor Tom’s Imbroglio.

  • Try using a good Australian Gin - there are so many to choose from! There are also some nice Australian sweet vermouth products but if you can only find Martini or Cinzano Rosso, it will still work well.

3. Cosmopolitan

Recommended glassware: D-Still 295ml Polycarbonate Diamond Cut Old Fashion Glass

This recipe is perfect for warmer weather and can be made ahead, stored in bottles and taken on the road with you. It’s also easy enough to make on the spot. Recipe below is for one.

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 30ml Vodka

  • 15ml Triple Sec

  • Half a lime, squeezed

  • 60ml cranberry juice

Method:

Shake all ingredients over ice and pour everything into your glass. Garnish with an orange or lime wheel or wedge.

Recipe notes:

  • As for your espresso martini, you can make this in any device you can shake. You can also pour the ingredients straight over ice if you don’t want to shake it, just be sure to give it a good stir before you drink!

4. Espresso Martini

Recommended glassware: D-Still 270ml Polycarbonate Noble Martini Glass

This Espresso Martini has only two ingredients, and is easily made on the road.

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 45ml The Kraken Spiced Rum

  • 75ml Mr Consistent Espresso Martini mix

Method:

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker (or a protein shaker) with ice. Shake well until foamy and chilled. Strain into your glass and drink!

Recipe notes:

  • The choice of alcohol you use is up to you- this mixer can be used with vodka, white rum or any dark spirit like whisky, cognac, brandy, bourbon or rum. I use spiced rum as it adds heaps of flavour!

  • This can be made in any shaking device you have - you definitely don’t need fancy equipment. You could use a drink bottle, a cocktail shaker or a protein shaker. If you don’t have a cocktail strainer, you can use the strainer on your shaker, a tea strainer or mesh strainer. Otherwise, dump the cocktail, ice and all into the glass!

  • If you can’t use Mr Consistent, use leftover brewed coffee, some sugar and your choice of spirit to make your martini.

5. Dark and Stormy

Recommended glassware: D-Still 385ml Unbreakable Pina Colada Glass

This super simple recipe is a crowd pleaser, easy to make for one or many and can be served with your choice of white, spiced or dark rum.

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 30ml Rum

  • Ginger Beer

  • A few dashes of bitters (optional)

  • Squeeze of fresh lime

Method:

Add ice to your glass, pour over the rum and top with ginger beer. Squeeze a wedge of lime and top with 3-4 dashes of bitters if using. Garnish with lime slices or wedges.

Recipe notes:

  • You can use any rum for this- traditionally this recipe calls for dark rum, but any rum will work! We have used a spiced rum in this.

  • Use a good Aussie ginger beer like Bundaberg, Bickfords or Capi

  • Make it look fancy by pouring the rum last

  • The bitters are optional but adds a nice contrast to the sweetness of this drink.

6. Pina Colada

Recommended glassware: D-Still 385ml Unbreakable Pina Colada Glass

This is an easy shaken pina colada that only uses 3 ingredients (plus a squeeze of lime).

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 60ml Rum or Coconut Rum

  • 30ml Coconut cream

  • 60ml Pineapple juice

  • Squeeze of lime (optional)

Method:

Shake all ingredients really well over ice. Pour everything into your glass and top with more ice if needed. Add a squeeze of lime if using. Garnish optional- use pineapple or lime.

Recipe notes:

  • This recipe needs to be shaken or blended (if you have a blender on the road!).

  • You can use any rum- white or dark works well in this. You can also use Malibu or something similar.

  • You will need canned coconut cream for this recipe. If using coconut rum, you could use pouring cream instead.

  • Sweetened pineapple juice or juice drink works best in this recipe.

7. Classic Margarita

Recommended glassware: D-Still 315ml Unbreakable Margarita Glass

This is another two ingredient recipe, made easier with Mr. Consistent!

Serves 1:

Ingredients:

  • 45ml Tequila

  • 75ml Mr Consistent Margarita Mixer

Method:

Prepare your margarita glass by running a lime wedge around the rim and dipping in salt or sugar. Shake all ingredients over ice and strain into the prepared glass.

Recipe notes:

  • For the rim, you can create or buy sugar and salt mixers. I have used a chilli and lime sugar rim here. Alternatively use plain sugar or salt.

  • Silver or gold tequila is perfect for this recipe.

  • You don’t have to strain the margarita if you don’t want to- simply dump the shaken cocktail into the glass, ice and all.

  • If you don’t have Mr. Consistent, you can make an easy margarita with 45ml tequila, 15ml sugar syrup, 30ml lime juice.
