The Fortress, Grampians National Park, Victoria

Average Winter Temp: 14°C

Average Summer Temp: 27.4°C

Traditionally inhabited by: Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people

Featuring as one of the primary highlights of the rock-cut grandeur of the Grampians National Park, the Fortress is a magnificent sandstone landform aptly named after its steep buttress-shaped cliffs and rising towers. The massive structure, that offers some of the best views of the surrounding landscape, is located in one of the most remote parts of the Grampians, and scaled by means of a rather challenging hike.

Travellers can journey into the spectacular landscapes of the Park, admire its stunning panoramic views, and observe its numerous peaks and gorges, as well as the countless brilliant samplings of Aboriginal rock art that lend them an extra edge of character.

The Fortress rises to impressive heights over the spectacular natural landscape of the Grampians. At the same time, it is conveniently located just a few hours away from major cities in Victoria. Pick your next free weekend to experience the raw charisma of the Grampians, or if you prefer to make your plans well in advance, head out there in the first weekend of May for the “Grape Escape”, the popular food and wine festival held every year at Halls Gap, the largest service town in the vicinity.
