Caravan Brake Systems FAQs:
-
1. How does Elecbrakes work?
Elecbrakes is a trailer mounted brake controller that connects to the trailer’s existing electrical circuits. This can be wired in with a user who has electrical know-how or by an auto-electrician. The unit can also be connected very easily with our “Plug + Play” adaptor which requires no wiring knowledge. With either method, the unit is powered through both the tail light circuit and the brake light circuit.
The trailer brakes are activated by the Elecbrakes unit when the driver applies the brake pedal in the tow vehicle. The trailer brakes are applied with a proportional degree of force based on how hard the tow vehicle is braked.
-
2. Is it possible to use Elecbrakes with a 24v truck?
Absolutely. Elecbrakes are compatible with both 12-volt and 24-volt input systems. The system automatically adjusts its output to 12 volts, ensuring seamless operation with your trailer’s brake system even when used in conjunction with a 24-volt truck.
-
3. What trailers can Elecbrakes work with?
The brake controller will work on all trailers up to 4500kg ATM that have electric or electric over hydraulic braking systems. This includes but is not limited to caravans, camper trailers, toy haulers, tradie trailers, equipment hire trailers, agricultural trailers, car trailers, boat trailers and horse floats. Using the standard wiring setup Elecbrakes supports braking on two axles, with all wheels braked.

4. Why do I need a brake controller for my caravan?
If your caravan has electric brakes, a brake controller is legally required in most regions. It enhances safety by synchronising the caravan’s braking with the tow vehicle, reducing stopping distances and preventing trailer sway.
-
5. Where is a brake controller installed?
It is usually mounted under the dashboard of the tow vehicle, within easy reach of the driver for manual adjustments.
