Ask any experienced traveller what the best battery for a caravan is, and you’ll likely hear one question in response: AGM or lithium?
AGM batteries have long been the standard in caravanning and off-grid power setups. But in recent years, lithium batteries have surged in popularity thanks to their lighter weight, longer life, and greater efficiency.
So how do you decide which is right for you? In this guide, we break down the key differences between AGM vs lithium batteries to help you choose the best option for your caravan setup. For a deeper dive into all the factors to consider, check out our comprehensive Caravan Battery Buyer’s Guide.
Battery Capacity & Efficiency
When comparing AGM vs lithium batteries, capacity and usable energy are critical considerations.
While AGM and lithium batteries might both be rated at 100Ah, that doesn’t mean they deliver the same usable power. AGM batteries can only safely use around 50% of their capacity, while lithium batteries can use up to 80–100% without damaging the battery.
Why Lithium Wins:
-
More usable energy per amp hour
-
Higher efficiency when charging and discharging
-
Faster charging times, meaning less waiting around for power
Size & Weight Comparison
Size and weight are major concerns for caravan owners, especially when you're trying to maximise payload or fit batteries into tight compartments.
Let’s look at a real-world comparison:
Battery |
Dimensions (L x W x H) |
Weight |
---|---|---|
Enerdrive eLITE 100Ah Lithium |
310 x 170 x 236 mm |
19.2 kg |
Average 100Ah AGM Battery |
483 x 170 x 241 mm |
42.5 kg |
That’s a significant weight saving and a much smaller footprint. When travelling in a caravan, every kilo counts.

Depth of Discharge & Cycle Life
What Is Depth of Discharge (DoD)?
DoD refers to how much of a battery’s capacity is used. For example, discharging a 100Ah battery down to 20Ah means you've discharged the battery, to an 80% DoD.
Why It Matters:
The more shallow the discharge, the longer your battery will last. Here’s where lithium batteries truly shine.
Lithium Battery Example – Victron 100Ah:
-
80% DoD = 2,500 cycles
-
70% DoD = 3,000 cycles
-
50% DoD = 5,000 cycles
AGM Battery Equivalent:
-
80% DoD = ~750 cycles
Over the life of the battery, lithium delivers far more usable power, making it the smarter long-term investment.
Battery Applications: AGM Still Has a Role
While lithium is the winner in most categories, AGM batteries still offer advantages in certain applications.
-
Hybrid options: AGM batteries are available in cranking + deep cycle models
-
Lower upfront cost: For low-power or occasional use setups, AGM may be sufficient
-
Wide compatibility: AGM batteries work well in older or simpler systems without lithium-compatible chargers
Note: Most lithium batteries cannot be used for engine starting, but some brands like Invicta now offer hybrid lithium models.
Cost: Short-Term vs Long-Term Value
AGM Batteries:
-
Lower purchase price
-
Suitable for tight budgets
-
Ideal for weekenders or occasional travellers
Lithium Batteries:
-
Higher upfront cost
-
Much longer lifespan (up to 10 years or more)
-
Greater usable energy = better value over time
With lithium prices steadily falling and bundled kits available, the gap is narrowing fast. If you travel often or need serious power, lithium is usually worth the investment.

Recommended AGM Batteries
Power AGM:
Power AGM batteries are reliable and built tough. With a range from 55Ah to 270Ah, their 135Ah deep cycle battery is very popular with our AGM customers. These batteries are designed to be used in caravans, RV's, boats, ATV's and even forklifts. All Power AGM batteries come with a two year warranty for private use. Check out this battery and battery box combo for a quick and easy portable setup.
Zeal:
The Zeal AGM range offers a reliable, maintenance free unit with low self-discharge, giving you a great value for money option. Choose from 7Ah, 105Ah and 125Ah options.
Recommended Lithium Batteries
Enerdrive:
The Enerdrive ePower B-TEC lithium batteries all come with a built in Smart Phone monitoring system and an Internal Battery Management System or BMS. The BMS monitors each cell in the battery to protect the battery from over charge, over discharge, over temperature and short circuit.
The 200Ah BTEC is a great choice and our most popular model for caravan owners. Check out the 300Ah lithium battery from Enerdrive, ideal for running a 3000W inverter and powering high current appliances like induction cooktops.
Renogy:
If you're hesitant about the larger cost of lithium batteries, Renogy might be the brand for you. Although they are heavier than most brands, they come at a much lower price point, and still offer the standard benefits of lithium plus a 5 year warranty. Their Core Series Deep Cycle Lithium Iron Phophate batteries come in 100Ah, 200Ah, and 300Ah options.
Invicta:
What do we love most about the Invicta lithium batteries? The huge 7-year warranty – never before seen in the market until now. Invicta offers a range of lithium batteries in 12V, 24V & 36V and 9Ah right through to 300Ah. Check out Invicta's hybrid lithium range designed for both deep cycle and engine cranking applications.

The Victron 200Ah 12.8V Smart LiFePO4 Lithium Battery is a ideal solution for people want to run high powered inverters. Other batteries limit the amount of continuous discharge current available, and therefore limit the size of inverter you can power. This battery will have no trouble powering an inverter up to 3000W. Installation of this battery is a little more involved, an external Victron Battery Management system and Victron Battery Monitor is required to install this battery. A battery management system (BMS) and Battery monitor are available from the accessories list on each Victron Lithium Battery.
Baintech:
Baintech has a slimline lithium battery range. This is ideal if you need to fit your battery unit in a tight space. Some slimline lithium battery models even have a built in DC to DC charger. The entire range has a BMS system and are incredibly lightweight too.
Final Thoughts: AGM vs Lithium – Which Battery Should You Choose?
Choosing between AGM and lithium depends on your budget, travel style, and power needs.
-
If you’re an occasional caravanner or want a low-cost option, AGM batteries still do the job.
-
But if you're heading off-grid regularly, want to save weight, maximise usable energy, and future-proof your setup, lithium is the smarter choice.
A lithium battery can last up to 10 times longer than a budget AGM and deliver more usable power, so you’ll save money in the long run.

Add lithium
Hi my battery box is outside in front of the wheel ,a steel box with lots of ventilation but it may get wet if travelling in wet weather is this ok to fit my lithium battery ?By: Mal on 02 February 2024

This is a great question, Lithium batteries are designed to be stored and used in dry locations. It would be best practice to ensure your investment stays clean and dry.
Battery conversion to lithium and ventilation requ
Trakka, makers of my van, declined to give me advice on converting to lithium batteries as they say the requirements to seal the batteries in a box and provide ventilation are too difficult. Has anyone experience of this requirement please?By: Andy Lloyd on 18 December 2023
www.caravanrvcamping.com.au Response
Hi Andy, the new changes are easy to adapt. The Lithium batteries need to be isolated from anything else in the van. So for example if your batteries will be stored under your kitchen bench seats, they need to be partitioned from the rest of the storage area. Vented to the outside wall of the caravan and the lid sealed with a gasket and latch rather than just a hole on a piece of board. Enerdrive have also released a fitting guide in line with the changes and you can find it here https://enerdrive.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/ENERDRIVE-DOMETIC-Guide-For-Fitting-Batteries.pdf Please don't hesitate to contact us on 1800 787 278 if you have any further questions.
Solar and batteries
Hi we just had our hibrid checked as our batteries were not charging, they said we need to put three new batteries at the moment we are using AGM is it better to change them to lithium and what price would this be.By: Normell Ward on 28 February 2023
www.caravanrvcamping.com.au Response
Hi, there is shift in consumers moving to lithium. They are lighter to carry therefore reducing your overall towing weight. They can also discharge more than the AGM battery so you can essentially get more out of your lithium.
