What’s So Special About Caravan Steps

Caravans are large vehicles, meant to home a family during the length of their camping stay. As a result, most are extremely tall and require a set of steps to easily enter and exit.
With a variety of makes and models available on the market, choosing a set of quality caravan steps is not always as easy as it may seem. You’re probably asking yourself, “does it really make a difference? What’s so special about caravan steps?”
But, caravan steps, like any other product on the market, have been specifically designed to offer campers differing benefits based on their needs. If you’re in the market for a brand new caravan step, then the following are a few things you should be keeping in mind:
Number of Stepping Platforms
The first thing you should be considering when purchasing caravan steps is the number of stepping platforms. Although, upon first thought, you wouldn’t think that the number of platforms makes a difference, it’s quite important if you plan on camping with children, seniors, or individuals with mobility issues.
Although steps with one platform are smaller and easier to store, as a result of their engineering, they also require a larger step/physical strain to step on and off of them.
Two-platform steps, despite being heavier and less convenient, require much less effort to use and are often engineered with larger base platforms which serve to add stability.
Two-step platforms are generally recommended if you plan on camping with any of the populations listed above.
Most caravan steps are fabricated using one of three materials:
2. Aluminum Alloy
The most durable caravan steps are built using steel. Despite their resilience, however, steel steps have been known to exhibit rust when their paint becomes chipped, scratched, or damaged.
Aluminum alloy steps are considered an alternative to steel; however, these models are also more expensive due to the methods used in their fabrication. Many campers consider aluminum alloy to be worth the price though, especially considering their comparative strength and extremely light weight.
Last are plastic caravan steps. As can likely be guessed, plastic steps aren’t quite as strong as steel and aluminum alloy models, but do exhibit other benefits such as a cheap price and light weight. It should be noted that, due to the ribbing technology used to strengthen plastic steps, these models do not offer folding capabilities.
Most caravan steps are equipped with a tread as a safety precaution. Unfortunately, not all of these treads can be considered equal.
Steel and aluminium alloy step models generally incorporate either a metal mesh or a rubber tread plate; however, the rubber tread is generally considered to be more slip-resistant and effective at preventing accidents and falls.
If you’re not completely satisfied with the quality of your step’s tread, various add-ons can be purchased to improve on them. Glow-in-the-dark caravan treads, for example, provide an added grip all the while simplifying the task of locating steps during a late-night walk or adventure.
