Caravan Fridges Explained
There are two main types of caravan fridges on the RV market today. Firstly, is your 3 - way fridge delivering the user 3 fuel sources to choose from, 240 volts, 12 volt and Gas. Enabling the adventurer to operate their fridge anytime anywhere whether it be free camping where there is no 240-volt power available, or even on the road when your only choice is to run your 12-volt power supplied from the cars electrical system when the engine is running. Finally, is your availability to use Lpg Gas as a fuel supply so if your stationary and not on the move and 240 volts is not an option you can turn your fuel selector to gas and run your fridge on your RVs Lpg gas supply. It is important that the gas pressure shown on the data plate corresponds with your gas regulator. Because of safety risk, it is strongly recommended that you do not operate on bottled gas whilst on the tow. A naked flame is prohibited at petrol stations, motorway service areas and in most tunnels. Many of the 3-way fridges on the RV market today are absorption style principal, in which the application of heat causes refrigerant to circulate in a closed system of pipes at the rear of the refrigerator cabinet, there are no moving parts.
Features and Benefits of Absorption Fridges:
- Quiet and efficient operation
- Availability of 240, 12volt and Gas
- Avoiding the use of moving parts
- Highly resistant to wear and tear
- Easy to maintain
Compressor fridges are just like your fridge at home known as two-way fridges, they run on either 12 volts or 24 volts (usually from your household camping batteries or from your vehicle) or 240-volt power which is available through a powered site or your portable generator. As a general rule compressor fridges or 2-way fridges are able to cool down to a lower degree and keep chilled more consistently than your three-way design, regardless of the adventures location whether it be the stifling heat in upper North Queensland or the Snowy Mountains down in Victoria due to the stronger and more efficient compressor motor. This also enables some of the compressor fridges to double as freezers. Another advantage of the compressor fridge is its undeniable workings on un even terrain or slight inclines delivering the same output and efficiency as it would be operating on a level surface. Designed and manufactured with 12-volt operation in mind the internal workings of these fridges are built to run on battery power.
Features and Benefits of Compressor Fridges
- Able to operate on un even terrain
- Able to cool to lower temperatures
- designed to operate off battery power supply
- less of a drain on a car battery during normal operations
- Generally run more efficiently than absorption types
